Sexism?!

I am a sceptical man. Generally, if I don’t see or experience it for myself, I don’t believe it’s true. This makes it hard when it comes to things like sexism, because if it were there like so many people say it is, I probably wouldn’t notice. And if I did, I certainly wouldn’t feel the full impact of it.

Getting from A to B

This post was inspired by a discussion at the pub last night about how to pronounce ’route‘ (as in ’the route from A to B‘) and ’router‘ (the network packet-switching device, not the woodworking tool).

Knights of Columbus Not Fit for Spokane University

“The Knights of Columbus, by their very nature, is a men’s organization in which only Catholics may participate via membership,” says a letter obtained by The Cardinal Newman Society written by Sue Weitz, Vice President for Student Life. “These criteria are inconsistent with the policy and practice of student organization recognition at Gonzaga University, as well as the University’s commitment to non-discrimination based on certain characteristics, one of which is religion.”

Open Source Bug Bounty

A major problem with the open source development model is the time between issues being reported and issues being fixed. The motivation required to continue to push for merges (by updating code based on reviews, adding tests, conforming to style guides, etc.) can be very high. This leads to many issues going unresolved for quite some time or, in some extreme cases, forever and, when issues could be resolved by code in pull requests, when pull requests go stale and motivation declines, possible contributors are put off and allow their code to descend into oblivion.

Not this Again – Female Priests in the Catholic Church

I’m getting really sick of people talking about having female priests in the Catholic Church. So I thought I’d talk about it too.

Morality and the Limits to Freedom

I love freedom. But when people use the phrase, ‘It’s a free country’, I can’t help but cringe. Not because I hate freedom or object to others taking advantage of the freedom we are fortunate to have, but because they’re not only taking advantage of freedom, they’re saying (or at least I’m hearing): ‘I am selfish. My rights are more important than others’ and I am going to stand up for myself!’ Freedom needs limits.

Off the Grid

Just about every day, I hear about someone else going ‘off the grid’ and can’t help but chuckle condescendingly to myself, ‘they’ll almost surely fail’.

Morals in Schools

We do not allow and we’re very clear with the passage of Bill 13 that Catholic teachings cannot be taught in our schools that violates human rights and which brings a lack of acceptance to participation in schools.
