Teresa of Avila (1515–1582) was a Spanish Carmelite mystic, reformer, and Doctor of the Church. Her best-known work, *The Interior Castle* (*El Castillo Interior*, 1577), describes the life of prayer as a journey through seven concentric rooms of the soul toward union with God.
